Roles and Capabilities

ClassicPress uses a concept of roles, designed to give the site owner the ability to control what users can and cannot do within the site.

A role defines a set of tasks a user assigned the role is allowed to perform. For instance, the Administrator role includes every possible task that can be performed within a (single) ClassicPress site. The Author role allows the execution of just a small subset of tasks within this site.

Via the Settings > General screen the “New User Default Role” can be set. This default role will be assigned to newly registered members or users added via the Users screen. If necessary, the administrator is able to change this role afterwards, via the Users Profile screen.

Summary of RolesLink to this section

  • Super Admin – somebody with access to the site network administration features and all other features. See the WordPress Create a Network article.
  • Administrator – somebody who has access to all the administration features within a single site.
  • Editor – somebody who can publish and manage posts including the posts of other users.
  • Author – somebody who can publish and manage their own posts.
  • Contributor – somebody who can write and manage their own posts but cannot publish them.
  • Subscriber – somebody who can only manage their profile.
This user role is useful if you have a membership site, eCommerce store, or another site where users can register and log in.

Plugins may add additional roles with custom capabilities. For example, an eCommerce plugin may add a Shop Manager role, that gives that user other capabilities than, for instance, an Editor.
